We are looking for a seasoned data engineer to join the team that’s building Roche’s cloud-scale commercial end-to-end next generation computational science software system. This system will support the test development for the world leader in diagnostics across clinical chemistry, immuno-assays, PCR testing, genomic and oncology analysis as well as digital diagnostics. The data solution will allow scientists globally across our different sites to access and share relevant data for their cutting edge research.

Essential Responsibilities:

As Principal Data Engineer for the Computational Science & Informatics organization, you will lead the architecture activities related to modeling and documenting the data which supports our data collection from clinical studies, routine testing and test development across the full range of diagnostic testing. You will collaborate with existing data solutions to ensure a long term data architecture, while at the same time supporting ongoing scientific research. The candidate for this role must possess the ability to synthesize and harmonize complexities across a broad range of topics related to our end-to-end testing solutions and be able to create documented data models which support analytics across this space.

Success will require providing software modeling leadership across project and product boundaries with the goal of delivering a cohesive and well designed data experience.

As our new Principal Data Engineer, you will:

  • Lead the data engineering activities across the projects and coordinate with the CSI architecture community of practice.
  • Partner with SW development teams to define solution-level technical models and designs that support engineering consistency and efficiency of software development practices.
  • Identify new, actionable trends and create means to assess their value for the company.
  • Drive design and integration inside and across projects towards developing end to end experiences that can scale to support multiple use cases and functional modalities.
  • Develop a blueprint for end-to-end data architecture.
  • Define and deliver conceptual modeling to meet needs for organizational standardization and upcoming needs in software applications.

Role Qualifications/ Requirements:

  • Degree in Computer Science or “STEM” Major (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) or related field.
  • Proven track record of technical experience along with experience working with multidisciplinary technical teams and international reach across multiple service types. Medical device and/or healthcare software experience, a plus.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience delivering data and analytics solutions which address internal/external customer challenges, including architecting as-a-service software solutions.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in the development and deployment of modern machine learning, as well as experience driving and executing cloud and digital technology strategies.
  • Ability and willingness to travel 20% of the time.

Desired Skills/ Capabilities:

  • Working knowledge of different database paradigms, cloud platform technologies (AWS, GCP) and security tools and technologies.
  • Experience working in complex projects that require in-depth knowledge across multiple specialized architecture domains.
  • Reviews and/or analyzes and develops large data models, as needed for end-to-end projects.
  • Experience building solutions that are secure and compliant with known standards or laws governing data privacy/security (NIST, HIPAA, GDPR, ISO27k, etc.)
  • Communicates clearly to coach and support key projects and strategic partners to achieve engineering excellence.
